Our story

Tŷ Cariad Africa was founded in 2003 following a visit by Paul Thomas, the Chaplain to South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. Paul's visit to the Uganda Fire and Rescue Service HQ in Kampala coincided with the return of a local firefighting team from an incident where they had rescued two babies who had been dropped into a pit latrine in an outlying village. Sadly, the babies died, and Paul shared in the fire crew's distress. He informed Pastors Joseph and Freda Serwadda (Senior Pastors of Victory Christian Centre) about this tragedy, and during the conversation that followed, the vision for a children's home run by the Victory Child Care Project with financial support from Tŷ Cariad Africa was conceived. Tŷ Cariad Africa is a registered UK charity in England and Wales, number 1124100.

Tŷ Cariad Africa has supported the work of the Victory Child Care Project over the years, and the provision of services and impact has greatly increased year on year. The project has now evolved to better reflect the needs of each child, with the focus always being on providing family-based care wherever possible. As a result, we now provide residential care, temporary care, reunification, foster care, adoption, community support, and education.

The Victory Child Care Project is the main project that Tŷ Cariad Africa supports, although we also partner with other projects working in Uganda with similar aims and objectives.

Our history

Since 2003, Tŷ Cariad Africa has been keen to explore, learn, and develop its provision and support for orphans, vulnerable children, and communities. We have always looked for ways to help those in need, and have focused our resources on developing our ability to do so.

We have seen the project in Uganda develop from a home which catered for a handful of children, to one which can look after up to 50 children. We have also cared for over 150 children who needed temporary care, and are actively involved in fostering children. We support communities, and help to strengthen and empower other projects in Uganda to develop their potential, which in turn supports more orphans, vulnerable children, and communities.

We are excited about the future for Tŷ Cariad Africa. We are constantly looking to expand the projects we are involved in, and make a difference to those we support. We continue to strive towards relieving poverty, sickness, and distress, and providing education.

Here are some of the ways we are making a difference:

  • We provide residential care for children who have no other family or home.

  • We provide temporary care for children who need a safe place to stay while their families are working to get back on their feet.

  • We help children to find foster families who can provide them with a loving and stable home.

  • We support communities by providing them with access to education, healthcare, and other essential services.

  • We help to strengthen and empower other projects in Uganda so that they can reach more children in need.

We are committed to making a difference in the lives of orphans, vulnerable children, and communities in Uganda. We believe that every child deserves a chance to grow up healthy, happy, and loved. With your help, we can make that dream a reality.
